Lady Bird (Greta Gerwig, 2017)
In this blog post I will cover the film Lady Bird and its message to the world
The movie is about a troubled teenager named “Christine McPherson (Lady Bird)” who is embarrassed by her parents, her home, her body, her brother, her friend, her state, and the way she lives. Lady Bird would always lie to people about where she lived, how she lived, etc… She dreams to go to an out of state college despite her mum’s worry, she eventually and slowly starts loosing everyone close to her such as, her best friend, her two boyfriends, her brother, her brothers gf and her mother. The story leaves a message behind as Lady Bird regains the relation ships she had lost and realising that she doesn’t need to lie to everyone about her life to make friends and for people to start loving her. She realises that sometimes she is in the wrong and doesn’t always need to have the satisfaction of others to live how she wants to.
I would say this film would lie in the “coming of age” genre. As it shows Lady Bird growing from a bratty naive girl to an independent woman.
The film was created by Greta Gerwig in 2017, Greta didn’t have much influence or style from previous films as this is the film that really pushed and kickstarted her career as a director.
They used techniques of the effects of Lady Birds attitude when she lies or is rude to her family and friends, as a few examples: her telling her brother “you wont get a job with all that metal in your face” which caused him to become insecure of them and take them out, as another example her asking her dad to drop her off away from school because she was embarrassed of him playing a role in his depression, or not talking to her best friend made them grow distant and stop talking.
A sign of how society reflects the film can be shown towards the end of the film when Lady Bird shakes a boys hand and the boy finds it strange she shakes hands as its seen as masculine and un-lady like. And the representation of pro-choice and pro-life in the abortion assembly she had.
The film represents the struggle of a un-financially stable broken family and how she hates her body or other aspects of Lady Birds life, in the film there is so much wrong in her life that some parts people may feel a connection to and I think this is done so everyone who views the film can see a piece of them in our main character.
I enjoyed the film from start to finish and Lady Bird is a very easy to hate character but as the film progresses and Lady Bird starts to notice her wrongs, you also slowly grow fond of her, which I believe is done on purpose to show how she also grew closer to other people. Personally I would rate this film ★★★★☆ only missing the one star because its not the typical film I would watch or something I would expect to enjoy
